What a Journey! Would I recommend starting your own business? Certainly, but make sure you get the support of your family and friends and surround yourself with people who are willing to help and support you. 😁 #associations #smallbusinesses #business

When Kelly Watson Dando asked if I'd be interested in writing an article on association strategic planning how could I say no? I have facilitated over 150 strategic planning sessions and this has been a big focus of mine for over 10 years. I hope you find some good information in this article and if you need a strategic planning facilitator or help setting goals, let's talk!

Who else is doing the work you do, or the work you want to do in your industry?Attending the local chapter of an industry specific association meeting continues to be one the best ways to hang out with, and learn from, the people who are actually doing the work you want to do in your industry. If you’re not already doing this, you may want to consider the practice of regularly attending one of the 60-90-minute breakfast, lunch or after work meetings for your industry.-Before you go, hop on LinkedIn to see who’s already in the group. See the name of someone you’ve been wanting to meet? Here’s your opportunity to do so.-Interested in developing your leadership skills, deepening your connections, or increasing your visibility? Volunteer for one of the open committee chairs, or offer to speak on a topic you’re known for, or want to be known for.- Rethinking staying in the industry you’re in and considering transitioning into a new industry? Industry association meetings are an excellent way to learn more about that industry before you go all in.-Feeling generous? Be the “Official Greeter” and introduce guests and new members to each other at the meeting. As with anything else in life, consistency is key, some chapters will be more robust than others, and your mileage may vary. Attend at least three consecutive meetings -and/or different chapters if you live in a larger city –before deciding whether or not this particular group is for you.Which industry association would you recommend people belong to for the business you’re in and why?
