Museum celebrating Make Music Day

The Museum of Making Music hosts free music-making activities and performances and will open its new, interactive exhibit, “What Good is Music?” on June 21, as part of a worldwide celebration, Make Music Day. The celebration began in France as theFête de la Musique in the early 1980s. Highlights include an Interactive Drum Circle (visitors can borrow a drum or percussion instrument from the museum and join trained leaders for a drum circle), Jam on the Lawnand Make & Play: Get Your Shake on with Studio ACE. Musicians of all ages, especially little ones, can make a musical shaker. The museum is at 5790 Armada Drive and is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. Summer Soulstice Arts & Wellness Festival

Soultry Sisters hosts its third annual Summer Soulstice Arts & Wellness Festival from June 21-23 at New Village Arts and Harding Community Center featuring local artists, creatives, healers and wellness practitioners. This year’s theme is “Reclaiming Ancestral Healing.” The schedule includes creative expression sessions, wellness workshops, social mixers, live performances, dance and sound healing. Summer Sundays kick off June 23

Gourd show at community center

An exhibit of gourd artwork by local artist Grace Swanson opened at the Encinitas Community Center and continues through Sept. 4. The exhibit features 10 pieces of original artwork created by Swanson and 17 pieces from her collection of gourds from around the world, including gourd spoons, bowls and a musical instrument from Nigeria and Niger; yerba mate gourds from South America and burned gourds from Peru. Center hours are from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is free. The Escondido Art Association holds its Summer Solstice Soiree from 5 to 8 p.m. June 21 at Churchill House, 140 W. Travel group for seniors plans trip

The nonprofit Escondido Senior Travel group is planning a trip to a limited-time exhibit at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on Aug. 15 in Los Angeles and is looking for participants. This year is the 50th anniversary of the movie “The Godfather” and memorabilia celebrating the art and science of making the movie will be on display at the museum. Attendees can also see items from other movies, ranging from “The Ten Commandments” to “Jaws.” Lunch will be on your own at the Original Farmers Market and the Grove offering indoor and outdoor eateries. The Senior Service Council Escondido is looking for volunteers to serve at the reception desk several hours a week. The annual Don Coryell Charity Golf Classic will be presented by the Morgan Family Foundation on June 21 at the Steele Canyon Golf Club, 3199 Stonefield Drive. Soroptimists hold awards dinner

Soroptimist International of Lemon Grove recently held its annual awards dinner, which drew several local leaders including Lemon Grove Mayor Racquel Vasquez, who presented the club with a proclamation recognizing its work in the community. Live Your Dream educational awards were given to two women who provide the primary financial support for their families, so they can further their education, increase their skills and improve employment prospects. Two outstanding female high school seniors, from Helix Charter and Mt. Miguel, were awarded college scholarships. The club’s service project recipients included the Lemon Grove Historical Society, Lemon Grove Friends of the Library, Girls on the Run and You Are Not Alone. In total, $6,000 was raised and awarded this year by the club.

Chili cook-off fundraiser June 29

The Lemon Grove Lions Club and Lemon Grove Forward Club, which are volunteer groups that serve the community, will host a Chili Cookoff from 5 to 8 p.m. June 29 at Lee House Courtyard, 3205 Olive St. The event will feature a chili-tasting contest, where attendees can help pick the “best chili in Lemon Grove.” There will be music, a cash bar, a raffle and a silent auction. Homeownership workshop June 17

National City will host a homeownership workshop for residents at 6:30 p.m. June 17 (in Spanish) about the newly approved homeownership policy that creates opportunities for homeownership within the city. The city owns several parcels of land that would provide space to build homes on city-owned properties. Under the new policy, affordable homes such as condominiums and townhomes can be built within the next several years. To prepare residents to purchase these homes, the office of Councilmember Jose Rodriguez has partnered with Pacific Southwest Association of Realtors and county lenders to educate residents on starting the process of being homebuyers. Free lectures on earthquakes, upcoming elections

Farewell party for church pastor

North Coast United Methodist Church will hold a farewell luncheon to honor its pastor, Drew Davis, and family, on June 23 after the 10 a.m. service at about 11 a.m. Davis, who served at the congregation for six years, is moving to the Temecula United Methodist Church. High school puts on all-class reunion

The Oceanside High School’s All-Class Reunion is from 9 a.m. to noon June 23 at Oceanside’s Heritage Park, 220 Peyri Drive. Classes can set up their canopies. Ocean Beach Street Fair June 22

The 44th annual Ocean Beach Street Fair & Chili Cook-Off is from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 22 at the 4800-5000 blocks of Newport Avenue along the waterfront. Highlights include two stages of live music, community mural projects, an Artists’ Alley featuring handmade items from local artisans, food and merchandise vendors and a chili cook-off, along with the Seaside Family Fun Zone with giant inflatables, craft making and music lessons. The Beachside Beer Garden open for guests 21 and older offers cold brews or co*cktails with an ocean view. The OB Dirty Birds Wing Eating Contest and Hodad’s Burger Eating Contest will take place midday on the main stage. Guided tours from bay to Balboa Park

Bay to Park Paseo provides a free guided tour from 10:30 a.m. to noon June 29 along Park Boulevard from San Diego Bay to Balboa Park to see installations designed by leading San Diego artists. The 1.7-mile paseo, endorsed as an Impact Project of World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024, was created to encourage walking and to highlight the connection between the San Diego Bay and Balboa Park. The paseo includes up to 13 installations outside iconic locations along Park Boulevard. Outdoor music performances at Liberty Station

The Liberty Station Arts District Summer Music Series is from 4 to 7 p.m. June 23 featuring Tulengua at North Promenade. Presidio Walking Tour on June 23

A Presidio Walking Tour is from 1 to 2 p.m. June 23 at the Junípero Serra Museum in Presidio Park, 2727 Presidio Drive, at the river’s edge and through the Presidio grounds. The tour focuses on the Presidio de San Diego, buried underground below the museum. Visitors will learn about the historical significance of the site and how archaeologists and historians have discovered the buildings and structures that were there previously, and reconstruct what they may have looked like. Participants can stroll through the new exhibition inside the museum and hear from Kumeyaay people today, whose ancestors lived along the river’s edge. Association for Advancement of Science holds conference

The more than century-old nonprofit American Association for the Advancement of Science – Pacific Division will hold its annual conference from June 17-20 at the University of San Diego Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice, 5555 Marian Way. There will be speakers from the natural, physical, social, and health sciences along with engineering and artistic/humanistic areas of science. The speakers come from high schools, community colleges, universities and from industry and government. The conference has a heavy focus on student work. Summer food distribution program

Feeding San Diego is providing families in need of food assistance this summer with meal and food distribution sites across the county at places such as libraries, recreation centers and schools. Meals come in boxes containing one week’s worth of prepared meals (e.g., five breakfasts and five lunches) to be eaten on-site or taken home. Mariachi Camp among summer music camps

Villa Musica, San Diego’s Community Music Center serving San Diegans of all ages, will run through Aug. 2 for students from ages 5-16. Camps combine classic summer camp fun with independent learning and musical expertise. Free class on nutrition, fitness for cancer patients

A free virtual nutrition and fitness class for folks undergoing cancer treatment is from noon to 1 p.m. June 18. The class, hosted by Scripps Cancer Center, will teach about food flexibility for optimal nutrition during cancer treatment, as well as signs and symptoms related to treatment. Attendees will learn about optimal hydration and nutrition, including the importance of adequate protein and calories. Common side effects and nutrition intervention will also be discussed. Friday Nights Live features pageant

Friday Nights Live entertainment is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. June 21 at the Santee Trolley Square, 9884 Mission Gorge Road. The event features the Miss Santee Pageant and children’s activities. Sock Hop Dance coming up

The Sandpipers Square Dance Club holds a Sock Hop Dance on June 22 at St. James Parish Hall, 625 S. Concerts at the Cove runs through Aug. 8

Antique Engine & Tractor Show

The Antique Engine and Tractor Show featuring machines of the past is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 15-16 and June 22-23 at the Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum, 2040 N. Santa Fe Ave. The show includes dozens of antique engines and tractors, each with a story. Visitors can stroll through the exhibitions, see live demonstrations of engines and tractors in action and meet their owners. Scottish Highland Games this month

The annual San Diego Scottish Highland Games are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 22-23 at Brengle Terrace Park, 1200 Vale Terrace Drive. Fire Department to unveil vehicles

The Vista Fire Department’s fire apparatus ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for 4 to 6 p.m. June 20 at the Vista Civic Center, 200 Civic Center Drive. The department will unveil seven new emergency vehicles and will give the public a chance to learn about the city of Vista’s public safety programs.
