French fries are one of those comfort foods that make me happy, but as much as I enjoy them, the calories and I don’t get on at all! Thankfully, there are ways around them, and for me, the best answer to making homemade French fries is in my air fryer. OH, I love me some golden fries!

For the best French fries, making them homemade is the way to go. Not only do you know exactly what’s in them, but you can also pimp them up any way you’d like from the size and cut to the seasonings you add.

To get the flavor, I always look for Idaho Potatoes, you know, the ones that say they are grown in Idaho and have the official Grown In Idaho seal. You can use any of the varieties they grow, but for my air fryer homemade french fries recipe, I love to use a russet potato, although golden potatoes or red potatoes work great too.

What You’ll Need:

  • An air fryer, of course.
  • Oil, such as olive oil or vegetable oil.
  • Potatoes! My favorites? Russet Idaho Potatoes, about 5 – 6 medium-sized.
  • Optional seasonings, such as salt, pepper, anything you love.
  • Optional dips or condiments, such as ketchup, mayonnaise, or your favorite aioli’s.

Why do I need oil for the air fryer?

Actually, no oil is needed in an air fryer, and should definitely not be put in one. But if you want to get that crispy finish to your foods, you can toss your ingredients lightly in oil before adding to the air fryer basket, and voila, a crispy texture!

Other tasty recipes to try:

  • Truffle Fries! Love these, you can also take the flavors and use them in this air fryer recipe.

How to make Air Fryer Homemade French Fries:

Step One:

Prepare the potatoes. Wash, peel if desired, and cut into 1/4 inch thick slices. Place cut potatoes in a bowl of cold water for 10 – 30 minutes. Drain, pat dry, toss in a little oil, and place in the air fryer basket.

Step Two:

Once added to the air fryer basket, do not overload basket. Mine has a do not overfill or max line. Follow directions for your air fryer. I tend to always go with 360°F for no less than 25 minutes with a full basket.

Step Three:

During the cooking time, toss every 5 – 10 minutes to help with cooking the fries evenly.

Step Four:

Enjoy your air fryer homemade French Fries with your choice of dips or sauces. I love a smoky tomato aioli or use the seasonings for making truffle fries, oh my goodness yum!

Yield: 2 - 4

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 30 minutes

Total Time: 40 minutes

So easy to make, satisfying, and a healthy way to enjoy everyone's favorite comfort food, French fries.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Idaho Potatoes, such as russet
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt, to taste

For the Smoky Tomato Aioli:

  • 1/4 cup sundried tomatoes in oil, drained
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 - 1 1/2 teaspoons smoked paprika

Instructions

For the French Fries:

  1. Wash the potatoes, peel if desired (I usually keep the peel on), cut into 1/4 inch slices.
  2. Place in a bowl and cover with cold water, this will help prevent a mushy French fry. Let stand in water for about 10 - 30 minutes or up to overnight covered in the refrigerator.
  3. Drain, pat dry, and toss lightly in the oil.
  4. Place in the air fryer basket and cook at 360°F for 25 - 30 minutes, tossing every 5 - 10 minutes, cook until golden brown. Adding a few minutes if needed to get the desired doneness. (Work in batches if needed.) Remove, season with salt, and serve immediately.

For the Smoky Tomato Aioli:

  1. In a food processor, add drained sundried tomatoes, mayonnaise, garlic, and smoked paprika. Blend until smooth. Will keep covered in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Notes

You can use seasonings such as parsley, chives, make these into Truffle Fries, or serve with your favorite condiments or dips, such as the suggested Smoky Tomato Aioli.

To reheat, simply place in the air fryer basket, and heat at 360°F for 5 minutes.
