Let me share my story about my experience dreading going to work. There was a time when I was just hitting my early 20s and work became very routine for me. I loved working with kids and seeing them improve when I was working as a Speech Pathologist. However, quarter life crisis hit me and I was trying my best to keep up with a hectic schedule of sometimes working from 8am until 6pm with no breaks. In short, I got burned out.

This led to seasons where I have been dreading Monday because I need to fulfill my responsibilities. Thankfully, with much patience and with God’s help, I was able to find passion in work again.

Although I work at home at present and I’ve somehow escaped that feeling of dread, I would like to share my insights of how to overcome disliking work or going back to your usual routine.

Always dreading work? Strategies that help

Think about how you help others with what you do.

One of the reasons that kept me going even if I got burned out with working is how I was able to help others with my profession. In my previous work, I help children and adults with special needs. Even if the hours are long and my breaks are almost never there, I was reminded of how I am able to help someone communicate better.

At my present work, I know I am helping someone find information when they are suffering from substance abuse.

With this, my passion was restored. I believe that all types of occupations help others in some way. Whether it’s to:

  • Build awareness,
  • Provide relief,
  • Bring enjoyment,
  • Or make life easier,

Always know that you are making a difference whatever you do. Some people may be always dreading work because of the nature of their job. Sure, you may be flipping burgers or punching numbers on a cash register–but little did you know you may be helping a single mother who has no time to cook for her children or a homeless person having his only meal for the day.

The little things you do matter because it affects the course of other people’s lives.

Take a break.

Easier said than done, right? But breaks aren’t optional if you truly want to stop always dreading going to work. When your mental state isn’t well, you can’t give your best to the people you serve.

You need to take a break once in a while. Yes, if you have leaves, use them wisely. Invest in your happiness as well because you can fill in other people’s cups only if yours is filled. Go travel places. If that’s not your thing, stay at home and relax. Whatever your idea of a break is, go do it.

Have a self-care morning routine.

I have said this before, and I’ll say this again–what you do in the morning helps bring the pace of your day. If you started your morning unprepared and rushed, you may end up having a bad mood throughout the rest of the day.

This is true for my case. Although I believe that we must rejoice for everyday is a day that God made, there are still some things we can do to improve the course of our workday.

In the mornings, I love to start my day with coffee and devotionals. I read my Bible and write down notes about the passage for the day because it helps me have the right perspective. After that, I will do my exercise and shower, and I will proceed to taking care of my son and working during his naps.

Always dreading work? Have quality time with God first!

Finding a small window of time to rest in God can be helpful as a part of your morning routine. This devotional can help you out in starting that journey.

You can do the same, or create your own routine that makes you feel good about your day. Make breakfast, have a quick exercise, or read God’s Word. Not only will you feel like your starting your day well, but you will also have some me-time instead of rushing and offering yourself to work right away.

Understand that work is a way to honor God.

Believe it or not, work is not a burden, but a gift from God! According to the Bible, God created us for “good works”:

“For we areGod’shandiwork, createdin Christ Jesus to dogood works, whichGodprepared in advance forusto do.” Ephesians 2:10, NIV

Good works include our occupations, our ministry, and the things we do for others in our day-to-day lives. This is our way of fulfilling our purpose, of honoring God. Saying that we are dreading Mondays or always dreading work may translate to us dreading the purpose of why God made us!

Instead of focusing on the hassles of your daily commute, or the stress of your work interactions, see it as a way to honor God. The challenges in your job or business can be lessons for you to learn and your victories can be opportunities to show your gratitude unto Him.
